Blessed with Liberty

TODAY'S BLESSING: GENESIS 49:18-19

“I look for your deliverance, Lord."
~Genesis 49:18, New International Version

This iconic statement can almost be seem as a distraction in the midst of a dying father's prophetic musings over his sons. But I disagree.

Up to now, we've heard Jacob speak in much of the text about the spiritual failure and redemption of his sons. But this one sentence shifts the tonality of his blessings. It injects a spirit of liberty** into his musings that fulfills his ultimate desire for himself and his children; that salvation would come for him and for every generation after him.

Israel's hope springs eternal.

Freedom is Not Free, But It Is Yours

This shift in optimism begins with Gad:

“Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders, but he will attack them at their heels.
~Genesis 49:19 NIV

His son, Gad (whose name means a band of raiders), represents many attacks on their tribe by like-minded people. A band of raiders defeated over and over by bands of raiders. The devil knows how to use what feels, walks, and talks like us to distract and overwhelm us. Our job is to stay in the fight for freedom, to identify the vulnerabilities in our enemy (and in ourselves) while remaining hopeful that victory is eminent.

Freedom from what continues to bind you will not be free, but it is yours.

Let your hope spring eternal.

Lord, thank you for liberty in Christ Jesus. Thank you that no weapon formed against us will prosper. Because of you, all things work together for our good not because of anything we've done, but because you love us. You called us to this. You built us for this which means even what feels familiar cannot take away our victory. So, keep us optimistic in the fight. Let our hope spring eternal. We believe you can and we believe you will give us liberty. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The blood of Jesus has ingrafted all who believe into the coverage and blessings of God. Join me as we look at how the prophetic utterances of Jacob upon his sons in Genesis 49 speak life into our dreams and aspirations today!
