Are You Free?
Options. One of the most powerful things you can have is options.
Do I stay at this job or leave?
Do I end the relationship or press forward?
Do I serve God or man?
Ahh... the last you got you, didn't it? Got me, too.
Except in worship, I don't remember ever articulating those words about myself and even then it was as a proclamation that I do or will serve God. It's not a question that comes up in regular conversation unless we're (perhaps) rebuking the actions of someone else.
But right now, this is not about their choices. It's about yours and mine.
So Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My word [continually obeying My teachings and living in accordance with them, then] you are truly My disciples. And you will know the truth [regarding salvation], and the truth will set you free [from the penalty of sin].” ~John 8:31-32 Amplified Bible
Accepting the gracious gift of salvation is our pivot to freedom. The truth of Jesus as Savior and Lord should reign over any lie the world would tell us. It is this truth, and only this truth, that sets us free.
It also sets us apart.
Jesus was not talking to Gentiles in this text. He was talking to Jews... to those who had believed Him. People like us.
Obey my teachings. Live in accordance with my teaching.
He's talking to you and me.
With every breath, we have a choice.
Choices do not circumvent responsibility. They expose it.
When Christians don't look like Christ, people question the validity of Christ.
Christ proves himself through us.
God's truth sets our souls free. The choices we make because of it sets our lives free.
Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. ~John 10:7-10 New International Version
To choose Christ is to choose FREEDOM.
When we freely submit our lives to the Good Shepherd, we will come in to his presence and go out better because it. The peace, provision, and power of his pasture we will find.
With every breath and every decision, freedom in Christ is available to you. The choice is yours.
So... who do I serve, God or man? Glad you asked. I serve God.
Now, it's my job to live my life to where you don't have to ask.
What about you?
